We were driving along Aguirre Avenue, looking for a new restaurant we haven’t tried yet when we spotted this tiny shop with a “taco shop” sign painted on the wall beside it. It’s tucked beside the popular car wash, CleanLab. We already drove past it when my boyfriend and I blurted out at the same time, “Nakita mo yun?” Intrigued, we quickly (but safely, of course) made a U-turn.
The place is called Drive-By Taco Shop and quickly thought it belonged beachside. According to the staff, they’ve only been open for a month. The place is tiny, with just three tables outside, two 2-seater tables inside, and a bar. Although they have a small seating capacity, a lot of people arrived right after us.
We weren’t feeling ravenous so we settled with the staff’s taco recommendations—Chicharones and Extra Spicy Pulled Beef. You have the option of enjoying them with soft or fried corn tortillas. We also ordered Cheese and Garlic Quesadillas, my go-to Mexican dish.
It didn’t take long for them to serve our tacos, which immediately reminded me of El Chupacabra (a wildly popular Mexican hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Makati). While the portion and serving style is reminiscent of El Chupacabra’s famed tacos, did it taste as good? Hell yeah! One bite and we were convinced that this won’t be the first time we’ll be dining here. The Extra Spicy Pulled Beef exploded with heat and flavors in my mouth. I couldn’t get enough of it. The Chicharones was amazing as well. I felt like I died and went to taco heaven.
Even before we finished our tacos, we already ordered two more—another Extra Spicy Pulled Beef tacos and Smoked Paprika Shrimp tacos. My stomach was gyrating in glee with how delicious the quesadillas were. It was perfectly cheesy and garlicky.
It took a while for them to serve our second round of tacos. I didn’t mind, though. I knew it was worth the wait. And true enough, it was. While the Extra Spicy Pulled Beef was ravaged by my boyfriend, I savoured every bite of my Smoked Paprika Shrimp taco. I applaud them for the generous shrimp pieces they put in the taco. Seriously, I couldn’t properly fold my taco because it was loaded with shrimps. 🙂
I haven’t been this excited about a new restaurant in a while, and I urge you to drop by Drive-By Taco Shop as soon as you can! No need to drive all the way to Makati for a taste of authentic street tacos from El Chupacabra, because Drive-By Taco Shop is here! As long as they retain the quality of their food, Drive-By Taco Shop will be around for a while. 🙂 Go ahead and head to Drive-By Taco Shop now and have your fill of ridiculously amazing and affordable Mexican food! <3
